COMPTON, Calif. -- The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department says a written plea for help tossed from a barred window led deputies to detain 16 suspected illegal immigrants and make one arrest.
A sheriff's statement says deputies went to a home in Compton on Monday on a report that someone had tossed a child a note in Spanish. It said people inside were being held against their will.
Arriving deputies saw many people fleeing the home and couldn't stop them.
But they did detain 14 men and women and two boys, who were turned over to immigration officials.
A deputy killed a pit bull who advanced on him at the home, and deputies later arrested a fleeing man who allegedly bit a deputy's leg during a struggle.
