At 1:40 p.m., agents at the checkpoint encountered a Toyota 4-Runner, driven by a 38-year-old male Mexican national. During the checkpoint inspection, a Border Patrol K-9 team detected the presence of contraband
Agents examining the SUV observed anomalies to the bottom part of the rear seat and pulled up the carpet which exposed an access panel to a concealed compartment inside the SUV’s gas tank. Border Patrol agents discovered thirteen bundles of cocaine inside the compartment.
The suspected smuggler and narcotics were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
Despite recent innovative concealment methods carried out by drug smugglers in their attempts to transport their illicit contraband, Border Patrol agents have maintained a strong enforcement posture through enhanced detection capabilities. Border Patrol Checkpoints continue to serve as an effective enforcement tool against smugglers of humans, drugs, and other contraband. Since October 1, 2008, the Border Patrol in San Diego Sector has seized more than 1,077 pounds of cocaine.
